Raindrop Women's Association (RAWA) hosted many distinguished Austin women on Friday, November 4, 2016, for the first Ladies Coffee Night of the 2016-2017 season.
The chair of RAWA's Austin chapter, Asiye Candas, organized the night and welcomed guests. She emphasized that RAWA depends on its volunteers, and thanked all the participants. Kahra Perrette was the emcee of the event.
At this Austin Ladies Coffee Night, Irnela Bajrovic of the University of Texas at Austin was the keynote speaker. Ms.Bajrovic is collaborating on research that could transform the future of Ebola prevention. She has gained wide recognition for her research on an oral method of vaccine delivery, which could help vaccinate larger populations in arid climates, such as Sub-Saharan Africa. After she completes her graduate studies, she plans to pursue a career at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Ms. Bajrovic shared details about her journey from Bosnia to the United States, and her work at the UT-Austin. At the end of her talk, RAWA member Sueda Aslan presented Ms.Bajrovic with an appreciation award.
The program also hosted Zahra Shakur Jamal from AFFSA, the Asian Family Support Services of Austin. Mrs. Jamal called the attention to the perils of domestic violence and shared information about her organization’s support services for victims.
The Ladies Coffee Night also featured a delicious Turkish dinner, social games, gifts and a short presentation about Asure Day, a holy event for Muslims around the world.
The night ended with the thanks and good wishes of the emcee. A nextLadies Coffee Night is expected to be held in the second week of February 2017.
