azerbaijan-booth3.jpgThe weekend of September 8 and 9, 2007 became memorable for Houston, America's fourth largest city and home to more than 4 million people for an outstanding festival of joint Turkic people. The multiparty celebration was made possible by the Turkish Raindrop Foundation, a non-profit organization established in Houston with a mission to build bridges between different cultures through educational and cultural exchange. As co-sponsors of the event, the Houston-Baku Sister Cities Association (HBSCA) actively participated in this festivity of Turkic Cultures and Children's festival representing Azerbaijan.

Supported by Azerbaijani students of different universities in Texas, HBSCA volunteers represented our country at a traditionally decorated booth displaying general information materials, souvenirs, arts and cultural artifacts, mostly provided by Azerbaijani Government institutions.  Regularly, short term presentations and documental movies have been broadcasted at the booth. For making parents happy and able to enjoy the offerings of the festival to its full, a small area decorated in an oriental style, full of toys and with supervision of volunteer sitters was provided for children.

For Houston, this was a first time event at which the public was offered a wide variety of programs highlighting the many different heritages shared by Turkic peoples - stretching from as far west as Bosnia, Turkey, and Azerbaijan to as far east as Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
The festival, which was held in a park outside the down-town Houston City Hall and which attracted more then 7000 visitors, gave the visitors a unique opportunity to experience Turkic culture and hospitality through cultural displays, art and craftworks, books and music, Turkic food, folk dance, parades by an Ottoman military band and an evening concert by the famous Turkish pop/rock band Ayna.

As is the case with many of the other cultural events in Houston, it is anticipated that also the Turkic festival will be repeated annually and grow in terms of programs and performances in order to satisfy the cultural interests of Houston’s diverse and multicultural community. Having very friendly and fraternal relations with organizations of other Turkic countries, HBSCA felt its honor to represent Azerbaijan and became happy with the outstanding interest to our country’s culture, history and current positions in the world from the guests of the event.
