Last Saturday (April 5th, 2008) University of Houston Cullen Performance Hall hosted a great event! It was the 2nd Annual Statewide Turkish Language & Talent Olympiad . From singing to poetry, from folk dances to talent contests there were myriads of activities that students and visitors could enjoy.

Hundreds of students, parents, academicians, state officials, counsels and community leaders from all over the state of Texas experienced unforgettable moments.

Students worked very hard to get the best places in 14 categories divided into three levels of (6-12 grade Turkish language students), (K-5 grade Turkish language students) and finally fluent speakers residing outside of Turkey. The winners of each category were awarded, and the first place winners will be sent to Turkey in representing the lone star state. They will have a chance to get to know Turkish language, society, and culture better during their times in Turkey. They will also meet their peers who are representing more than 100 countries in the internationally recognizez 6th Annual Turkish Language Olympiad in Turkey.

Since 2003, the Turkish Olympiad Association based in Istanbul, Turkey has worked in promoting the widespread usage of Turkish and with the goal of applauding the best Turkish students. Every year since the first Turkish Olympiad - five years ago, the number of participating countries has increased dramatically from 21 countries in the first year to 100 in 2007 (For more info click http://www.turkceolimpiyatlari.org ).

This event was yet another contribution of Turkish-American community to Houston's becoming an international & global city since it's one of the most diverse cities in the U.S. . This will also help students in Texas to have a broader vision about the world and better linguistic and cultural equipment for the future.Raindrop Turkish House thanks to all students, parents, and visitors for their generous support in helping make this event come true.
