Turkish Coffee Night is back with all its glamour!

raindrop_turkish_house_oklahoma_oct_02._09.jpg  Oklahoma City Raindrop Turkish House ladies opened the season with a fascinating Turkish Coffee Night on Friday, October 2nd. Raindrop Turkish House holds Ladies Turkish Coffee Nights for many years, and now they have become a tradition in Oklahoma. More than 60 ladies showed up for the night. The program started with service of Turkish coffee in authentic tiny cups. The theme of this month is "Women in Turkey." Nur Uysal, the Director of Outreach of Raindrop Turkish House, gave a presentation about the status and lives of women in Turkey. She shed light upon the Turkish women's journey through history, their economic and social life. (October 2, 2009, Oklahoma City, OK)

Uysal said contrary to Western stereotypes about Muslims women, women in Turkey are very dependent, self-sufficient, and active in the social life. and  She told the audience that Turkey had a female President in 1990s which is still a problematic issue in some of the Western countries. She gave examples from Turkish women who have achieved extraordinary success in business, politics, art, and sports. The second guest speaker of the night is Dr. Aliye Shimi from Tulsa. She is born to a Turkish immigrant family in Tulsa. Dr. Shimi talked about the difficulties and bounties to be raised within Turkish traditions in the U.S. and she also shared her experience of raising her children as a Turkish American woman in Oklahoma. One of the highlights of the night was the demonstration of the traditional Turkish Henna Party. The newly wed bride, Halime Aykan, was accompanied by ladies to the room with traditional songs and candles. The supposed mother-in-law put henna on her palm. The audience was charmed by these traditions. As always the program ended with delicious food from Turkish cuisine (baklavas, dolmas, borek and more...) and friendly conversations around the tables. The next coffee night is scheduled on November 6th. The theme of the program is "Women and Politics." Lt. Governor Jari Askins will be the keynote speaker.
